SEPTEMBER WORKSHOP

On September 18-19 I gave a workshop in fluid acrylics titled "Painting Silver and Lace" for the Southeastern Indiana Art Guild in Aurora, Indiana.  I know most of these ladies, some for years, so I knew they were all good painters, and suspected that the 3 I did not know were also good painters.  Turns out I was correct!
Since I was being photographed during the workshop, I just turned
the tables on "the photographer"!
Whenever I teach a workshop - unless I'm teaching beginners - I always think "what can I possibly teach these people?".   But it turns out that there is always something they didn't know.

I was asked to teach this painting in fluid acrylics, a medium some of the ladies had never used and some had used, but in a different way.  Since this was a project based workshop, we all painted the same painting for which I supplied the photo and tracing.

Long story short, a good time was had by all, and most were able to complete the painting in the two days allotted.  For those who did not complete the painting that weekend, they will be able to do so at home using what they have learned.

Here they are, all holding up their paintings for "show and tell".  (You may recognize this painting!)

Over all their response was positive, and I really enjoyed the experience.

BALL JARS - 2

Here are the paintings at the end of the second day.  All were at about the same state of completion - that is to say - not finished!

My aim was for everyone to get one jar, board and peeling paint section completed and then they could all finish up at home.  Mission accomplished!

Each artist was happy with her work and everyone not only got along well, but created some new friendships.  I consider this weekend workshop a success!

BALL JARS WORKSHOP - DAY 1

I held a workshop on August 15-16 for 5 students.  Our subject was some old Ball jars.  The object was to learn to paint not only the glass, but wood and peeling paint.

At the end of Day 1 this is how all of the paintings looked.

And ALL of the student work was better than the instructor's!

If some look a bit curved, that's because we are using Arches 140# CP and not taped down, so some are getting a bit curled during the drying process.

It was so pleasant that we ate lunch outside and enjoyed the view while we got to know one another better.

Later in the afternoon we looked out across the lake to see the little piggies terrorizing the little calves - and watched all of the mama cows terrorizing the little piggies!  We decided the piggies looked like a "gang" of thugs - and they had obviously gotten out of their fenced area.  So now we have the Piglet Gang - wonder where they will strike next!  (My husband later found them and will get them back where they belong!)

GLASS REFLECTIONS - FINAL

Here is a photo of the students (one lady had to leave early) holding their paintings.  Some are more completed than others.

Several emailed me photos of their finished paintings - and all said they had a great time!

GLASS REFLECTIONS - 1

My Glass Reflections workshop was the weekend of April 25-26 and I'm just now getting around to posting about it!  Oh well, better late than never!

I brought a couple of other similar paintings for reference, which you can see in the photo below.

Looks like everyone is working hard here . . .

. . . but not here!!!
Most everyone knew each other, so we had a really fun group.
These photos were taken as we were breaking for lunch so people were scattered about.
It was a small group - which allows for even more individual instruction.

POURING WORKSHOP - COLERAIN ARTISTS

Recently I was asked to give a pouring workshop to a local group of artists who work in all different media - the Colerain Artists in Cincinnati.

This was one day from 10 - 4.  Unfortunately, we were asked to leave a bit earlier so we didn't get them all finished.  And, of course, even though my intention was to get some WIP photos taken, that was not the case - will I ever learn???

So - here are a couple of nice overview photos of the space we used.  It was nice and evenly bright, the tables were large and round so 2 to a table worked perfectly with all of our paraphernalia for pouring.

Lots of laughter, lots of groans, lots of chatting - hmmm - could that be why we didn't all finish our paintings?

Last but not least, here are the painting I used as my example - on the top - and the painting I completed the next day at home.  I had most of it finished, except for another pour.  Then I gave it another good pour once all the miskit was on.
This was my example piece, painted a few years ago.

This was the piece I worked on at the workshop and then finished at home.
Which of these paintings to you prefer?  Identical picture, watercolor poured, but both quite different!

WORKSHOP - SILVER AND LACE - FINAL

Here is a photo taken at the end of the workshop.

Even after much moaning and groaning, much doubting and praying - all of the results were GREAT!

Why are we always so critical of ourselves???  Everyone can be very proud of their results - even those who hid their paintings behind the front row!!!  (Yes, you know who you are!)

I received many positive comments about the workshop.  Everyone had a good time, learned something, and hopefully gained confidence to paint another silver and lace painting on their own - I can't wait to see those results!

Here are some of the great comments I received for this workshop:
"It really was 'lots of fun and no pressure' - well, maybe a little pressure."
"This workshop was all I expected and hoped for.  It was very informative and fun.  I would recommend Deb's class to anyone"
"I enjoyed the workshop - good 'pacing' (not too fast/slow).  Loved all the positive comments and encouragement - good snacks"
"Really enjoyed the class.  Informative, instructional, enjoyable.  Liked the critique part, learned from each picture you touched."
"Great class!  Enjoyed it.  Appreciate the helpful directions and comments and positive encouragement.   A lot in 2 days!"
"Luvvved it!!!  I liked that it was fun, relaxed and a 10-hour, 2-day summary (or review) of most things we've covered in classes over weeks, in additiion to the specifics of the workshop exercise."
"So enjoyed your class.  I learned so much.  Hope to attend some of your classes.  Thank you so much."
"Great class.  Need more weekend classes."
"Thank you for bolstering my confidence.  Very nice to be in class again."
"You are a great teacher - so patient and encouraging.  Definitely will attend another workshop or class."
"Fantastic girl!!"

WORKSHOP - SILVER AND LACE - PART 2

I tried to take a few photos to show the set up and some of the students working, plus their works in progress.

Oh yes, there's also one photo of the instructor hard at teaching!  At least I don't look too awful in this photo, graciously taken by one of my students.
For those of you old enough to know who she is - try to picture Raquel Welch here!!!
(Now that image looks a lot better, doesn't it!!!)

WORKSHOP - SILVER AND LACE - PART 1

The weekend of October 25-26 I held a watercolor workshop at the Cincinnati Art Club.

The topic was "painting silver and lace" - and we had a wonderful time - wish you would have been there!  (Oh well, your loss . . . . )

On Day 1 we worked on the background and began our silver vase.  Of course, there were some "whines" but also a lot of "wows"!

Here is what my view was for the 2 days - 12 students working hard!

Not only did we paint like crazy, but we also ate pretty well!  I brought rolls and afternoon snacks, and one of the other ladies brought 2 kinds of home made breads/cakes.

Well fortified, we made it through the day - painting right up until the 4 p.m. "deadline".
Some of the students enjoying some fellowship during lunch.
This is what my demo piece looked like by the end of that day.  (Excuse the mess on the table!)

SILVER PITCHER - 1

This fall I'll be giving a workshop painting silver and lace, and this is the photo I chose for that painting.

I know - you are now thinking "What - is she nuts???  I can't paint that!!!"

But - YES YOU CAN!

Here is the drawing which I painted from - full sheet watercolor.

The workshop will feature this painting, but in a half sheet size and not quite as much detail - see - I told you - you will be able to do this!

So if you are interested in taking this workshop, contact me and I'll send you more information.  Send an email to dwardart2 at (use the @ sign) yahoo.com and be sure to put "workshop" in your subject line.

POURING WORKSHOP - APRIL 26-27, 2014

Several folks took my pouring workshop at the Cincinnati Art Club at the end of April.
All hard at work.
On Day 1 we all painted together in the morning to get started, then they were on their own for the rest of the day since the process time will begin to vary by individual.
Marion with her painting - first time she had poured.

New student, new to painting

Another new student and new to painting

Love the delicate pinks and corals in this one

This student was not happy that her lines showed - so I suggested that she "embrace and go with it."
She will be adding some line work with a Micron pen to actually accentuate the lines more

Another one with such beautiful and delicate color changes

On Day 2 they could paint their own, with my help.

The following photos are of some of the work completed over that weekend.  Of course, I didn't get photos of everything - but would you expect anything else from me!
I thought this one turned out beautifully - she thinks she will re-do it with some slight changes

Gerri with her Day 1 (right) and Day 2 (left) paintings

Day 2 - first time pouring - "by George, I think she's got it"

What a challenge this one was - how to represent poured Gatorade!
I think she did a very good job!
