Then we began to paint the daisies.  As you know, I like to glaze, so we used several layers to bring up the color on the flowers.

Then we removed the miskit and began adding the colors on the background and on the vase, popping in a few darks in the flowers.  We then added the shadows on the fabric and vase - (I didn't get a photo of the painting after we added the vase shadow, but before completion).

This summer I began teaching a private student and she's doing great!  The next couple of posts will show a painting we did together with the end results.

I showed her a simple set up, using some of my oriental designed fabric, a small vase and some daisies from my local Kroger store.

I created a drawing from this photo and she followed along with me - I'm using my painting for the steps we followed.

We miskited the design on the fabric, then painted the background and around the edges of the vase and flowers.

VIEWPOINT 2014

Last Saturday my husband and I went to the ViewPoint show, sponsored by the Cincinnati Art Club.  

The venue this year was Art Design Consultants - a beautiful venue at the far eastern edge of the City.

I tried to get a couple photos of the venue itself - it began filling up shortly after we arrived, and I kept stopping to talk to people I knew, so I didn't get too many photos.

It always amazes me how many people I've come to know in the local "art world"!  Only problem is I usually don't get around the whole show because I'm always stopping and chatting.  I did walk around ADC completely, but I'm sure I still missed seeing a few of the paintings.

I also wore heels, not all that high, but high enough that after a while I could no longer feel my toes!  I was able to sit through the awards ceremony - and was happy to hear the names of several people I know called out!

Art Design Consultants places artwork in public and private venues, and I'm assuming that usually these walls in these "rooms" are set up with clients' artwork for viewing by possible buyers.  But right now these rooms are filled with ViewPoint artwork.

Well, no award for me, but I thought it was cool that I was one of only 4 who had two works accepted into the show, and they hung mine together!  I think they kind of compliment each other and it's always interesting to see your work hung in a gallery setting - looks different than when it's hanging on the wall at home!

Here is a gentle progression of the painting, showing the building up of shadows.

Color has been added to the tomatoes and more to some of the leaves on the napkin.

Color was added to the lace, and a light shadow added to the tablecloth and napkin.

Next I began adding some pink/magenta to the flowers on the napkin.

 All of the colors were deepened, and some of the stems and other dark areas were added to the tomatoes and leaves.

I applied yellow washes to the tomatoes and the leaves and flowers on the napkin.  Some greens were added to the leaves.

This layer was followed by some oranges and reds over the tomatoes and some darker washes over the tablecloth.

 For the next painting using the new Chroma paints, I chose an Ampersand cradled panel.

I drew this one onto newsprint the size of the panel (16x20) and then traced it onto the Ampersand.

I applied a wash of yellows and beiges using both the Free Flow and the Classic.

Here is the finished painting.  I added some gold leaf to the vase.

I'm not unhappy with the final product, but would probably have been more careful with the gold leaf.  Putting that glue on is like putting on miskit, and you have to be very careful with the placement.  In fact, in hindsight, it would have been better just to have painted in the gold but, that's what experimenting is all about, isn't it?

I liked the products.  The only difference I thought I noticed was that the fluid paint dried out a bit quicker than the Golden and DaVinci fluid acrylics do, unless that was my imagination.  I should probably do a comparison to the G and DaV paints, but don't think that is really part of the paint trial.
