VIEWPOINT 2014

Last Saturday my husband and I went to the ViewPoint show, sponsored by the Cincinnati Art Club.

The venue this year was Art Design Consultants - a beautiful venue at the far eastern edge of the City.

A view of a few of the art patrons.
I tried to get a couple photos of the venue itself - it began filling up shortly after we arrived, and I kept stopping to talk to people I knew, so I didn't get too many photos.

It always amazes me how many people I've come to know in the local "art world"!  Only problem is I usually don't get around the whole show because I'm always stopping and chatting.  I did walk around ADC completely, but I'm sure I still missed seeing a few of the paintings.

I also wore heels, not all that high, but high enough that after a while I could no longer feel my toes!  I was able to sit through the awards ceremony - and was happy to hear the names of several people I know called out!
One of the "rooms" set up around the outside edge of the facility.
Art Design Consultants places artwork in public and private venues, and I'm assuming that usually these walls in these "rooms" are set up with clients' artwork for viewing by possible buyers.  But right now these rooms are filled with ViewPoint artwork.

Another "room" - you can see one of the large windows.
Well, no award for me, but I thought it was cool that I was one of only 4 who had two works accepted into the show, and they hung mine together!  I think they kind of compliment each other and it's always interesting to see your work hung in a gallery setting - looks different than when it's hanging on the wall at home!
Here are my two paintings.

VIEWPOINT ACCEPTANCE

I just received an email that two of my paintings have been selected for the ViewPoint show.

The show will be open to the public September 10-25, Monday - Friday from 9-5 at Art Design Consultants, 310 Culvert Street, 5th Floor, Cincinnati, Ohio with the opening reception and awards on September 13 from 5-8,

I'll be curious to see the show this year, since this is a new and unique venue.  Click to find out more about Art Design Consultants.

Here are the two paintings that were accepted:

ADIEU TO 2013

Another year has come and gone.  Last December we survived the Mayan apocalypse; this year we survived the ravages of snow, ice and the floods they left behind.  Wonder what’s in store for 2014?

2013 was a pretty good year for me.  My artwork was accepted into:
  • Rising Sun 11th Annual Juried Exhibit
  • Woman’s Art Club 120th Juried Exhibit
  • Georgia Watercolor 34th National Juried Art Show
  • 45th Annual ViewPoint National Juried Exhibit
  • Ohio Watercolor Society 36th Annual Juried Show (Signature status)
  • Georgia Watercolor Society Annual Signature Member Show
  • Pennsylvania Watercolor Society’s 34th Annual International Juried Exhibition
  • Georgia Watercolor Society Annual Juried Member’s Show – 3RD Place Award
  • Watercolor Society of Indiana Annual Juried Member’s Show - Award
  • National Watercolor Society 92nd Annual Exhibit traveling show
One of the bloggers recently mentioned how many paintings she had produced this year which prompted me to go back and count.  I came up with 8 completed, not counting any I did for classes.  Even though I knew the tally would be low, I’m disappointed in myself.  Perhaps I will do a quick recount, 8 seems terribly low volume!
(Well, DUH, I just did a quick recount and came up with 13 - didn't check the "bin" paintings!)

Since my term as President of Greater Cincinnati Watercolor Society will be over in March, and I don’t plan on taking on any more administrative responsibilities, perhaps this year I’ll be able to get at least** one painting a month completed – that seems like a reasonable thing to accomplish, even as slowly as I paint.
** Note to self - "Deb, this means you can paint MORE THAN ONE PAINTING A MONTH"!

Here’s hoping that 2014 will be a productive, profitable, happy and healthy year for all of us!

VIEWPOINT - BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!

I just realized that I had not put up my photos from the ViewPoint opening.

As you can see, there was a good turn out.

My friend, Monique’s, painting of the motorcycle looked great on that yellow wall! I was so happy she got into the show, I believe it’s the third time for her. She painted this motorcycle at our annual retreat a couple years ago and I love it! Hanging next to it, on the left, is a painting by Wynne Bittlinger, one of our GCWS members.

Here is my friend, Rhonda Carpenter’s painting – “Caw Girl” – which sold at the opening! I’m so happy for her.
Here’s my painting, Dragon Tea. I can’t decide if that gentleman is looking at my painting or rushing past it to look at the oil painting next to it!
This painting of Christmas ornaments was painted by my friend, Marilyn Bishop’s, daughter, Peggy. Marilyn had a photo of this painting at one of our GCWS meetings and I was bowled over when she showed it to me – talk about detail!
Just thought you might enjoy these photos.

If you live near Cincinnati, please go see the show – check the left hand side of my blog for more information.

VIEWPOINT

I entered one painting into this year's ViewPoint  (sponsored by the Cincinnati Art Club)  which was accepted!  I look forward to seeing it hang at the Cincinnati Art Galleries this year.

This is a beautiful venue, about a block from the Procter and Gamble headquarters here in Cincy, with full length glass windows on 2 sides.  Last year's event was well attended, as I hope this one will be.

The juror was John Ruthven who accepted 72 paintings out of 400 submitted.

SHOWS

See my sidebar for upcoming shows.

I was asked to juror the Bethesda North show this year and I'm a nervous wreck about it.  Since I've so often been on the receiving end of a judge's decision, I'm well aware of how an artist feels if their work is not accepted into a show.  This is a huge responsiblity and I take it very seriously - and I don't want to mess it up!

If you are interested in entering the Bethesda North show, it is for artists within a 50-mile radius of Cincinnati, Ohio.  You can click on the link for more info or to request a prospectus.

Two of my paintings were accepted (one each!) into ViewPoint ("Flights of Fancy") and the Ohio Watercolor Society show ("Oriental Roses").

We have two Greater Cincinnati Watercolor Society shows coming up.  The first is at Kennedy Heights Arts Center, located about 2 miles south of Kenwood Mall, and I hope you will be able to either attend the opening or drop in some day while the show hangs.  This is a great facility and I'm so looking forward to this new venue for our Society.  The fall show will be at Evergreen Retirement Center and we will have 3 cash prizes.

And, last but certainly not least, my painting "Ying Yang Mums" (April 25, 2012 post) was accepted into the National Watercolor Society 92nd Annual Juried Exhibit!  YIKES!  I had to pick myself up off the floor for that one and re-read the email twice to verify what it said!

ENTERING ART SHOWS - PART DEUX - JUDGING THE AWARDS

Our ViewPoint show opening was a huge success last night; great crowd, beautiful show.  Watching the judging on Wednesday prompted me to write this post.

So, you entered the show properly and your painting was accepted into the show. Hurrah!

Now it’s time for awards judging.

What you will never know, and what I never realized until watching the judging process take place, is that your painting might have been in the running for an award!

In my (vast!!!) experience, the judge will take time to walk around the gallery several times, perhaps closely inspecting some of the paintings. If there are specific awards that need to be chosen (such as an award specifically for pastel or watercolor or a local artist or . . . ) the judge must take those criteria into consideration during the judging process.

Finally, on one of those walks around the room, the judge will begin to put a post-it note or some other indication on or next to some of the paintings. This process can take a while and sometimes the judge asks questions about certain paintings. Maybe a post-it note will come off one painting and go onto another painting. Maybe that will happen several times. At last, a decision will be made for each award and the judge will probably take at least one more walk around to ascertain that the final decisions have been made.

So, you never know, your painting may have been up for an award for quite a while until some criteria changed the judge’s mind to give that prize to another painting.

In addition, that old saying about not “painting for the judge” really is true, in my experience! A capable judge will be looking at each painting for its own merits and just because that judge paints in a particular medium or in a particular style doesn’t necessarily mean that only paintings done in the judge’s style or medium will be juried into the show. You may be surprised what that judge puts in. And those judges know when people are “painting for the judge” and guess what – they don’t really like it!

Always enter your best work, whatever it may be, and trust in the integrity of the judge and the organization running the show.

And, take heart, and consider yourself a winner any time you get a painting accepted into a show, especially a national show of any sort. You weren’t competing with local artists, but those from around the country, and your painting is holding its own and hanging on the wall next to some of the best painters in the country. And maybe, just maybe, it was up for an award for a while!

How cool is that?

Well, not as cool as winning that award, but still pretty darn cool.

And now you know the “inner secrets” of how an art show is judged!

* * * * *
I would like to add here Greg Albert's (ViewPoint judge this year) juror's statement - wise words, indeed.

Juror’s statement by Greg Albert
11/2/2012
Judging an art show is always difficult. No piece is perfect and most will have many, but different, qualities that make choosing some over others a challenge. But in the end, a judge must do what the artists themselves had to do: draw the line somewhere. Although I attempt to be as objective as possible and consciously apply the established principles for assessing the relative quality of artworks, I recognize that in the end, all judgments about art are subjective and personal. Another judge would most likely make different selections using the same criteria. That alone should remind the artists not to take any one judge’s decisions too seriously, or become discouraged by the results.
A judge can only see and assess a work in front of him. No juror can know the background or context of its creation. The effort, energy, frustration or satisfaction the artist experienced in its creation is not known. It’s unfortunate an award can’t be given to the artist who had the most fun while making his or her art.
There are two generally accepted criteria for judging art in a show: concept and execution. Concept is the idea behind the work. Is the idea original? Is it significant? Is it interesting? Execution is how the idea was expressed in perceptible form, which includes composition or design, the use of color, line, contrast, as well as craftsmanship or control over the materials used. These criteria apply to both representational and non-representational artworks. An unoriginal idea, no matter how well executed, or a poor execution of an idea no matter how brilliant will not get this judge’s nod.
Seeing such a variety of great work in this year’s Viewpoint Exhibit is a thrill. I hope everyone who participated will be encouraged and inspired to continue producing more great work.

OVERWHELMED BY ART SHOWS . . .

I've been slow on the posts lately - sorry for that.

Haven't had a lot of time to paint, too much WORK involved right now with art shows, both entering them myself and working on ViewPoint.  In fact, I've been so busy that I completely forgot to pick up a painting - that's not like me (usually, anyway!)

For those of you interested, the ViewPoint entries have been given to the judge for selection and you will be receiving your notification letters at the beginning of October.

With another busy weekend looming, looks like I won't get any painting done again.  I'm itching to get back to complete one and re-do another - posts on both coming soon, I promise!

Hang in there!

ENTER VIEWPOINT!

We interrupt our regularly scheduled painting to bring you this (un)paid advertisement.

If you have not already done so, it’s not too late to enter ViewPoint 2011! (Deadline: Entry Postmark August 31, 2011)

Check out my sidebar for more information on this National Show, chaired for the 3rd (and last) time by Yours Truly.

And no, just because you are my blog buddy, I cannot promise that you will be included in the show if you enter, but, if you feel your work is worthy, I’d love to have you enter the competition. Especially if you work in watermedia – it’s my mission to get more watermedia paintings than oils and pastels entered – so I’m really, really (shamelessly) trying hard here, folks!

Go to the Cincinnati Art Club website and download a prospectus today!

You will be competing with some of the best painters across the nation (and Canada, Eh!). Our prizes are great and each year it’s an excellent show.

Hope to see your entry soon!

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming!

HOW I SPENT MY WEEK - VIEWPOINT SHOW

This week my “work week” began on Saturday – at the Cincinnati Art Club with some prearranged helpers and a few who recruited themselves! – opening the shipped work for ViewPoint.
Sunday required a few phone calls and emails to keep the ViewPoint show on track.
Monday - up to the art club to receive the dropped off paintings. I took a book to read to occupy myself – sounds boring, doesn’t it? Well, seems I know many of the artists and it was fun to take a few minutes to chat with each (some a bit more than a few minutes!) – so I never even had time to begin my book!
Tuesday – easy day - went to have copies of the show program made
Wednesday – to the Art Club for the awards judging. Nita Leland scared the pants off of me at one point, but other than that, the day went well. Nita was very informative about the jurying process and I enjoyed seeing her again. After she left I tagged all of the artwork; then it was home to begin working on the awards list and making phone calls.
Thursday – I took care of putting together all of the awards, making and receiving phone calls and getting everything organized for Friday night.
Friday – the big day! As I say, the show is kind of like a Thanksgiving dinner – there are so many parts to it but they all have to come together at one moment in time. We loaded the door prize, plus the awards, into the car and got to the art club early, even with a "Friday night traffic jam"!  Just in time to figure out how to put together the easel which was the door prize – and then people began walking in the door.
I’m told that at one point people were waiting in line to get in! I knew it was crowded - I’ll take that as a great tribute on a well received show!

Winners will be listed, with photos, on the CAC website – click on ViewPoint - but give us a few days since our webmaster is out of town – by mid to late week those photos should be up  – and I’ll put up a link on the sidebar.
If you live in the Greater Cincinnati area, please stop in – weekends 2-5.

Got another busy week this week, and then I may take a little rest!

VIEWPOINT 2010

Opening:  November 5 - 6 to 9 p.m.
Location:  Cincinnati Art Club, 1021 Parkside Place, Mt. Adams (Cincinnati) Ohio

Around these parts, ViewPoint is considered a “big deal”, because, while it is a national show, it is local for us. We had a good number of entries from Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky – guess they figured that if they are accepted they can drive their painting here and don’t have to ship it.

ViewPoint is also an interesting show because it is so varied – we are not all watercolor, or pastel or oil – we accept most media, including sculpture.

The ViewPoint 2010 show has been selected by our juror, Nita Leland and she did a wonderful job! All of the acceptance and (sadly) rejection letters are in the mail, about to make some folks happy and some sad. But, that’s life and art shows!!

I’ll be looking forward to seeing all of the paintings come in by the end of the month, and then will look forward to finding out who will receive awards (that’s exciting!). And then I’ll look forward to the opening night. And then, I’ll look forward to a little relaxing!

Good luck to all of you who entered and were accepted!

Cincinnati Art Club Related Events

Been too busy to keep up with the blogs - what with classes here and there and all of the ViewPoint related activities - and fear it won't be getting any better until after the first week in November.
Just hang in there - I promise I'll have more art related posts soon!
However, I do have some good news to share - I'm now a signature member of the Cincinnati Art Club!

I hope some of you have clicked onto the ViewPoint information on the right side of my blog and downloaded your prospectus! This is a national show sponsored by the Cincinnati Art Club and this year it is being supervised by me. Hopefully all will go well!

If you have any questions about it, let me know. If you do enter, good luck to you!
